Mom blogger Lani Michelle recently posted an open call on her blog to bring breastfeeding back to Sesame Street, pointing out that in years past, nursing moms were not only featured, but openly discussed.

There are over 2,500 signatures on a petition so far, which specifically states that they aren’t asking Sesame Street to remove bottle feeding from the show, but to start featuring both again.
From the petition:
“If we normalize breastfeeding in our community, especially with our children, we can help raise a generation of breastfeeders which will support our economy, make for healthier children and lessen the risk of breast cancer for many nursing mamas!”
This comes on the heels of a few notable breastfeeding-related headlines.
NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne was recently taken to task after he posted on Twitter that seeing a mom nursing her little kid in a grocery store made him lose his appetite. Many moms were astonished by his public remark, but it seems just as many backed him up. Some fans of Kahne took the opportunity to compare breastfeeding to defecating or vomiting, concluding that none of it should be done in public. Forty-five states have laws that specifically allow women to breastfeed in any public or private location.
In late December, breastfeeding advocates organized a nationwide nurse-in at Target after a woman was harassed by a worker for nursing in one of the department store’s Houston locations.
The controversy behind breastfeeding in public is an ongoing, seemingly endless debate. La Leche League International is one of the more popular organizations behind supporting nursing moms and educating parents and children on the benefits of breastfeeding.
Where do you stand on the debate? Should women be allowed to breastfeed in public without fear of being harassed? Would you be accepting of seeing breastfeeding on Sesame Street episodes?
